Online "Ghost Websites" & Related Predators
SPECIAL ALERT! Please beware of contractor operations and contractor referral services you see online. Aside from the high potential for fraud against you it is suggested that you always be cognizant of the fact that whether out-of-state or in state, neither the contractor entities, the contractor's referral agency, nor the contractors recommended who operate in your state may be properly credentialed to do business therein. Red Flags, particularly in the cases of contractor operations and contractor referral services which originate online (but not solely) normally include:
a. No verifiable street address;
b. No e-mail address;
c. No visible name of owner/or false name;
d. For those located in your state, no record of existence with the your State Department of Revenue, Office of the Secretary of State, and/or with your state, county, parish, city, or town department for contractor licensure/registration;
e. No images of one or more people in positions of accountability for the firm in the "About Us" or "Contact Us" area of their websites (Indicative of having fear of being recognized by residents he/she/they scandalized or are targeting).
Also, it is very probable some of the most sophisticated may actually be listed with street addresses, e-mail addresses, and owner names with certain private and government labor agencies, alone, but can have also illegal expansion outfits which advertise online and operate under different names. These are also"Ghost" operations in that they are undocumented unscrupulous affiliates posing as completely different concerns.
Since these "spin-offs" are not registered, they can easily dissolve without a trace, and reappear under different unregistered names. In either case, these are not only threats to you as a consumer, but tax evaders and evaders from paying required fees for doing business in your state. This is a reason scandalous internet contractor operations and contractor referral services generally use only forms for communication in addition to several different toll-free numbers which normally patch into one central area.
Please, do your necessary research on ALL contractors, contractor operations, and contractor referral services, especially when they originate online (but not solely). If they are out-of-state, they are out of reach; if they are in state, they can still be out of reach. Please, make it your business to find out. You can do that here. VALIDATE!
